You've thought about martial arts for your kids. Yet something always "came up" or you've visited the "franchise chains" of McDojo-like martial arts and were turned-off by their crass commercialism.
Or maybe you've visited the bizarrely fake baby-sitting "dojo" that spouted philosophy borrowed from television shows and offered ninja clubs and black uniforms. Pretty fake, isn't it?
This time, though, you've come to the right place.
This is who we are:
- Goju Karate is the oldest and largest traditional school of karatedo and martial arts in NYC.
- We have 19 blackbelts training and teaching at our dojo. Actual real blackbelts who've spent an average of 14 years training to achieve their rank.
- Our Sensei is one of seven most senior blackbelts in the United States. Only two of this elite group accepts new students, and only one of them is in New York City. He leads our dojo and he does teach classes personally, including some of the kids classes.
- We are a very traditional dojo, and we're a non-profit. We don't charge fees for rank testing (that's unethical), we don't markup uniforms and equipment, and we do require stringent testing to advance in ranks. Our ranks are internationally recognized, not made-up belts and stripes.
- We teach the philosophy of karate as well as kicking, punching, and self-defense. There are 149 basic concepts that are core to all traditional martial arts (including karate, but also including Judo, Aikido, Kendo, etc.) We teach all 149. And we talk about them in class. Not to mention, our Sensei is the author of the two-volume "Karatedo is the Way" standard reference on the subject used by dojo throughout the world, including in Japan.
This is the real deal.
We have separate classes for Juniors (ages 4-6); Youth (ages 7-11); and Teens (ages 11+).
Our kids actually do real karate. They train and participate in a community dedicated to high-performance, setting and achieving goals, and so much more.
In other words, our dojo is the place where you wish your kids would spend a lot of their time.
Unfortunately, we can't accept everyone that applies. Our mission to uphold the highest levels of quality doesn't allow us to do that. Space always fills up fast, and we'd love to give you the opportunity to apply.
